Our new coral monitoring tool exists because of Ethan Shoe, who came to Bocas del Toro in Panama for our Revive scuba diving program and asked a question.
After helping to restore coral reefs, he asked our founder, Krista, if there was anything he could help with. She’d been tracking all the coral data in Google Sheets, but he went on to build something better.
Over two months, Ethan designed a real-time monitoring system for every coral we’ve outplanted. Growth, survival, genotype, outplanting method, structure material. Making all of it visible to anyone. What started as a family favor became one of the most important tools we have.
1,360 corals (and counting) are tracked today across five sites and nine reefs. Researchers can see our methods, donors can see their impact and Revive scuba diving participants can check on the corals they helped plant after going home.
World Ocean Day conversations fade each year by mid-June, but this tracker stays live as the data updates and the corals keep growing.
