Revive Reef Restoration Program

We need to get creative in our approach to coral reef conservation.

Coral reefs are extremely generous. These “rainforests of the sea” work overtime to keep our planet healthy and balanced. They produce oxygen, promote biodiversity, protect coastlines. They give us life and sustain our livelihoods.

Coral reefs are critical to the continued success of our planet — yet we’re destroying them at an alarming rate.

At Mother of Corals, we provide coastal communities with tools and resources to create and maintain artificial coral reef habitats. By working together to promote environmental and economic growth, we can make a sustainable impact above and below the water.

Coral reefs give us everything they have. It’s time we return the favor.

The mother of corals mission

Providing coastal communities with the tools and resources they need to help reef habitats thrive

Coral reefs play an essential role in creating healthy ecosystems — above and below the water. When they bleach and die (due to rising ocean temps, human destruction, pollution, you name it), they put into motion a devastating domino effect.

Without reefs, fish and other creatures are left without a place to live, breed, and hide, and coastal communities struggle to maintain their ways of life.

That’s where we come in. Our projects focus on training local community members to build artificial reef structures. Over time, corals grow on top of these cement structures to form a fully functioning reef — creating permanent fish homes and restoring the natural balance.

Elkhorn at Hospital Point, Taken by Mother of Corals, 2020 (top) vs. 2023

In Bocas, the struggling reef systems are a microcosm of our oceans' larger issues

These videos, taken just three years apart (2020 vs. 2023) show the staggering decline of this critically endangered Elkhorn coral.

Elkhorn (Acropora palmata) is an essential reef-building coral in the Caribbean. These complex, branching structures look like elk antlers, hence their common name.

Elkhorn provide shelter for fish and other crucial reef species, but when they die off, reef dwellers are forced to look elsewhere for a safe habitat.

At Mother of Corals, we’re working to restore areas like Hospital Point, so reefs can thrive for generations to come.

We're passionate about ocean conservation — and we have fun doing it

Founded in 2020 by Krista Shoe, Mother of Corals (MOC) is at the forefront of coral restoration and artificial reef construction. Though we’re technically headquartered in Denver, CO, we’ll go wherever our conservation projects take us.

Currently, our home base is in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Krista and the MOC team were instrumental in Mission Blue’s designation of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago Hope Spot.

As a team of ocean-obsessed scientists, conservationists, and travelers, MOC is focused on sharing our knowledge and striving for a global impact.
